Attack of the Anxiety!

Personal

Gyargh! So either it turns out I’m a nervous wreck kind of a guy, or I really need a new bike, or both, because the back still needs work.

Kate Schroeder had her foot on the base pedal when she said that the early/mid twenties would stab you right in the angst at least as badly as the late mid/late teen years.

At 5′8″, I should be riding a 53cm frame. My frame is 49cm – about someone 5′2″ should be riding. So it’s entirely possible that the back owes a lot to this. Course – to fix this problem, I need to abandon my frame and move the parts over to a new one, or get a new bike (or both). Either way it kills me, that frame being the nearest thing I’ve had to a girlfriend in five years.

I find myself spending more money on alcohol than makes me comfortable. Now partly this is because I’m a total booze snob. But first out, that’s money I could use elsewhere. Second, it means I’m drinking more as I get older. Boo. The imaginative construct of the Right Sam is joyful and generous in the fight against impossible obstacles. Flip reality right-side-up again, and it’s simple to topple the obstacles; less easy is freedom.

Professional

Got cast in a production of Hugging the Shoulder, a play about a guy who stuffs his brother in a van and takes him on the Great American (Heroin Withdrawal) Road Trip. Got turned down for a callback I was hoping for – Journey’s end, at the Griffin Theatre. Oh well, what the hell.

Hugging the Shoulder is going to be a crazy-tight rehearsal process. No matter we had a week to memorie and familiarize before getting in the rehearsal hall. We only get fifteen rehearsals before we open. Which is ridiculous. Our first rehearsal was on the roof of an apartment building in the South Loop, with the sears tower and the rest of it staring down at us. It was so very photogenic, and fit well with the fantasy of AdventürLife in Chicago.

I met up with Rani Waterman, the seventeen year old that played Medea and killed me in the first play I ever did. She was recently running at the Steppenwolf’s Garage space in Gary, and hasn’t been seventeen for some ten years. Gary was directed by the same bloke who wanted to hire me at the Griffin and then didn’t – nice fella; Jonathan Berry. Rani turns out to be an instructor at the Actor’s Gym in Evanston, and makes much of her living in the Circus. So the specter of getting paid cash money to spin fire continues to taunt me. She says there’s much cash money to be had from such a skill. I gotta make an audition video.

Political

I’m applying for a job as canvass director for the League of Conservation Voters. Educating the Chicago Suburbs about how Republican Peter Roskam, who defeated netroots darling Tammy Duckworth by a nose in 06, has reneged on his promises to vote for various environmental causes. And everyone was surpri… oh, wait. Anyhow, it would feel good to get back on the horse.

I no longer trust Hillary, and I now believe that John Edwards is the closest thing to a real Progressive candidate. Which naturally means that depending on how the early state primaries go, and who builds what kind of hype momentum in them, I’ll probably keep my New Mexico registration and vote for Barry O.
