Virgin Burn

May 25, 2006

(allison is unreasonably hot when she spins fire.)

playing with fire between two train tracks -
this time, i spun: staff.

later, admiring the skyline from on top of a tanker car.
post-apocalyptic romantic.

gods, my life.

Net Neutrality

May 22, 2006

ok. so my buddy and i are talking about the new macs. and i’m thinking damn. those are gonna be pretty wicked. wireless everything, prcoessor speeds that make my inner eleven year old melt and evaporate, compatibility beyond our wildest dreams – the internet-to-telephone phone can’t be too far away. and he had the nerve to ask me if i wanted to get a tv. why get a tv?

and that’s when it hit me. the net neutrality issue is about tv. they’re going to want to put cable television online. the actual, physical cables are the same thing, they’ve already got some of the infrastructure they’ll need. so they’ll want to pipe bravo and band of brothers, and even probably Lost into your home via internet – imagine the advertising capabilities! -you can actually click on the ads you watch between segments! your computer will stream wirelessly into your tv, or more likely, you’ll have a separate tv internet hookup. there is a dizzying array of ways to make money off of an increasingly speedy internet if you’re a telecom company.
and some nasty liberals want to end all that. because the internet is now essentially not a television set with various channels. but that’s a much more profitable setup. right now broadcasting jon stewart straight into your home via internet with fully clickable links and flash overlays is impossible. or at least – doing so and charging for it is. or at least – putting the internet provider types – the big players in the tv and radio conglomerate business – is illegal.

not that it’s just tv. if we don’t get net neutrality then we could be in for a radical restructuring of what the internet is – and you get put back in that position that capitalism like to have you in: pure consumer.

wild. anyway. this ninja explains it surprisingly well.

portability

I don’t keep much stuff around. -I value my portability.

i’ve just been working on my bike for the last couple of hours. i’m glad to say that the back wheel is officially upgraded to a 27″ by 1 1/4, and i’m well on my way towards making it a true ninja roadbike. so far i’ve stripped off of this bike the back gears, one front gear, both derailers, the back brake and attendant handset, most of the painted logos, the quick release mechanisms, the front and back reflectors, and just about everything i can. it’s pretty close to being as streamlined as a functional bike can get.

i’m tuning it up and pruning it down because it’s one of the only things that i’m taking to provincetown for the summer. a duffle bag, my sound system, and the bike are plenty of objects to hold me over for three months.

moving again means streamlining my material life again. it’s a process i relish, because it reminds me that you come in empty handed and you leave the same way. i want to make my material life like a good poem – everything meaningful, and nothing unecessary.

i’ve always been a bit of a monk.
